Regain Sports Award Luncheon

JOIN SPORTING LEGENDS AND SUPPORTERS OF THE SPINAL INJURY CHARITY REGAIN TO CELEBRATE THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF TETRAPLEGIC MEN AND WOMEN. The charity’s 9th Sports Award Luncheon will be held at the Intercontinental London Park Lane on Friday 7th May 2010. It is an opportunity to recognise the considerable achievements of tetraplegic (severely paralysed) men and women and an important aspect of the day is the opportunity it gives tetraplegics from across the UK to get together. REGAIN is the only charity in the UK dedicated solely to improving the independence of people who have become tetraplegic as a result of a sporting accident. This includes riding, cycling, diving and rugby injuries. People who were fit and active sports people whose lives changed in a second when they sustained an injury.

Sports personalities at previous luncheons include Jason Leonard, Frank Bruno, John Inverdale, Brough Scott, Jenny Pitman, Richard Dunwoody, Kyran Bracken, Damon Hill and Peter Winterbottom. Tickets for the lunch cost £100 per person (£1,000 for a table of 10) to include a champagne reception and a three-course lunch with wine. Ticket costs for tetraplegic guests and their carers and partners are funded by the charity.

At the 2009 event racing legends Jenny Pitman (pictured centre right) and Brough Scott (pictured top left) paid tribute to an outstanding disabled sportsman and other inspirational people. REGAIN’s Tetraplegic Achievement in Sport Award was made to Mark Eccleston (pictured top right) for his great achievements in not just one, but three sports – table tennis, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair tennis. He won a gold medal for table tennis shortly after leaving hospital; captained Great Britain at wheelchair rugby and was the highest ranking British wheelchair tennis player in the UK before retiring after the Athens paralympics.
