BE PART OF REGAIN’S FANTASTIC SNOWDONIA CHARITY CHALLENGE – now in its 11th year. The event gets bigger and better every year as more and more teams return to relive the challenge, improve their time and set new records. The challenge is a triathlon-style event for teams of four who cycle 40 miles, climb Snowdon and canoe a lake course. It is tough but, with training, it is achievable. Some teams will complete the challenge in six hours or less. Most will take much longer. All funds raised support the charity REGAIN, the only organisation dedicated solely to supporting men and women who become tetraplegic (severely paralysed) as the result of a sporting accident including riding, diving, cycling and rugby injuries. At least one team member must be able to use a map and compass to navigate on the mountain section of the event. In addition to fastest time awards there are awards for the best fundraising team; best team spirit and the golden oldies.
Tetraplegic sportsman Steve Osborne was among the field for the 2010 challenge. He was a member of a nine-strong team called “TEAM STEVIE WONDER” (pictured left) made up of eight able-bodied members who supported and competed alongside him. Steve, 47, who is paralysed from the chest down following a swimming accident at the age of 18, used a hand cycle for the challenge and was assisted by his team-mates to complete the mountain section in specially adapted wheelchairs with handles and ropes attached.
